Making Christmas - Christmas

Written by Howard Mole - Bikers for Kids.

The Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run provides thousands of urgently needed gifts, food parcels and vouchers for people who really need assistance at Christmas time.

The Salvation Army has been the beneficiary of the Toy Run for 36 years, and each year, the fun event continues to help countless people.

“Throughout December and right up until Christmas eve, we get people coming in to seek gifts for their children,” says Salvation Army Newcastle.  “There are a lot of broken families in our community, a large amount of employment uncertainty and these are factors in creating pressure at the time of year where no child should miss out on the joy of Christmas.

Each year, The Salvation Army Community Services throughout the Hunter sees around 1000 families seeking assistance, which means approximately 3000 children will need community generated gifts this Christmas. This figure continues to grow each year and The Salvation Army really relies on Christmas Cheer programs and events like the Toy Run to meet this need.

Unfortunately, the pressure of Christmas doesn’t finish on Christmas day.

“Most people would also be surprised to know that our community services team will still be helping with Christmas assistance well into the new year,”

“In late January the credit card bills come in loaded with Christmas expenses, just when back to school expenses come around – it is often a very difficult time for people and they panic.”

Donate and help Families in Need This Christmas

We thought we would share this great story from The Salvation Army Australia Website. This story shows the great and very touching work the Salvos do for families in need at Christmas time. It also shows great insight to where the Toys, that our many Riders donate and carry with them on the day, go to and the difference we all can make.
